The Bible is the story of God’s love. Go through the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, as you see that the theme of love is very important in one way or another.  Certainly, The Bible deals with topics about love from many angles. But in this article, we will be interested in three types of love in the Bible.

Three Types of Love in the Bible

(1) – the love of God for humanity
(2) – the love of man for God
(3) – the love between humans.

These three points can be summarized in these terms, where the Bible states: ” As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Stay in my love. If you keep my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I have kept the commandments of my Father, and abide in his love … This is my commandment: Love one another, as I have you loved  “says Jesus Christ in John 15: 9-10, 12.
What does the Bible mean to love in these three respects?  The answer to this problem is the object of our article.

I – The First Type of Love in the Bible-the Love of God for Humanity

– The Love of God Revealed in Creation

The Bible tells us the story of Creation with dignity. Nature and revelation bear witness to the love of God. Our Heavenly Father, the Creator God, is the author of life, wisdom, and joy. Contemplate the wonders of nature. Note their perfect adaptation to the needs and the well-being, not only of the man but also of any living being. The sun and the rain that brighten and refresh the earth; the mountains, the seas, the plains: everything tells us about the love of God. It is God who provides for the daily needs of all creatures (Psalms 145: 15-16).
To speak of love in the Bible is also the love of God revealed in his creative work. It is out of love that God created the world and man. Through creation, this word must resound in our thoughts: ” God is Love “. (Read the book of Genesis 1 for the story of Creation).
In heaven and on earth, God has given us innumerable pledges of his goodness. Using nature and by proofs of love more tender and profound than the human heart can conceive, it has striven to reveal to us. Nevertheless, all this is only a reflection of its character:

– Love, a Character of God, Revealed in the Bible

The scriptures reveal the character of God. God in His word makes Him know His infinite compassion and love. When Moses sent him this request, show me your glory! The Lord answered him, ” I will bring all my goodness in front of you. ” (Exodus 33: 18-19), and passing by Moses, he cried.”  The Lord, the compassionate God, slow in anger, rich in goodness and faithfulness, who keeps his love up to a thousand generations, who forgives iniquity, rebellion, and sin. ”  Exodus 34: 6-7. He is ” slow to anger and rich in kindness ” (Jonah 4: 2), “for he takes pleasure in mercy.” Micah 7: 18. This is his glory.

The more we study love in the Bible, the more we discover that God is Love. ” Who does not love has not known God, for God is love … And we have known the love that God has for us, and we have believed in it. God is Love … ” 1 John 4: 8, 16.
Let’s see some manifestations of God’s love for humanity:

– A Proof of God’s Love for Humanity

The world was created perfect, and it is through our disobedience that we became sins. And love in the Bible shows us a more magnificent aspect of the love of God for humanity. One of the most famous passages of the New Testament evokes this love in these terms: ” For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. ” John 3:16.
Through this verse, see the meaning of love in the Bible regarding God’s love for humanity. The love that God has for us has been one of the motives of God’s plan of salvation for the fallen human race.
For a long time, the enemy of good has blinded the minds of men to such an extent that they approach God with fear and regard him as a severe and implacable being. He portrays the Creator as observing men with a scrutinizing eye in order to discover their errors and their faults and to strike them with his judgments. From which it is mentioned in the Bible that Jesus Christ descended from Heaven to reveal the Creator, the Father (see John 1:18, Matthew 11:27, John 14: 8-9).
And the character of God’s love was visible in Christ’s mission contained in Luke 4: 18-19. His work [that of Jesus Christ] testified to his divinity. Love, mercy, and compassion were revealed in each of his acts; his heart was filled with tender sympathy for the children of men.

The Love of God for Humanity Will Not Change

Disobedience, malice, rebellion, the cruelty of man, in a word the sins of man have not changed the love of God for humanity. This is also a sense of love in the Bible from which he writes: “But God shows his love for us, which when we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5: 8) But it was out of love for us that God sent His only begotten Son Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

It is a very fundamental truth; we cannot be accepted by God through our works. No rite of worship, no sacrifice, no good work – no matter how far – cannot allow us to return to God and tell him that we have done what is necessary to enter his presence.

God’s Attitude Towards Us Will Be Like That of the Father

But if we come with humility of mind and regret at the actions of the Prodigal Son, Jesus confirms to us that God’s attitude towards us will be like that of this father to his son. A welcome will be reserved for us, and God himself will cleanse our sins to the point that we will have the impression that they never existed. Surely, we wonder why does God does this? Eh yes! Because he is love. It is therefore also this love in the Bible that we must not lose sight of. Let’s read a precious statement of God’s love in the Bible in chapter 103 of the book of Psalms verses 9-13.
This statement is one of the wonderful truths that the theme of love in the Bible teaches. No other religion teaches it. All declare that we must strive to please God. Only Christianity in the New Testament affirms that we will not be able to please God by our own efforts. God Himself will make us irreproachable in his eyes. Through poetry, one of the Old Testament prophets expresses this saving work of God in the book of Isaiah 61:10.

– We Get Everything from God Through His Love for Humanity.

Above all, the theme of Love in the Bible teaches us that we receive everything from God through the love that God has for us.
May it be grace, the breath of life, and salvation in Jesus Christ: it is only the love of God that makes us benefit from everything. Know it, for love, God makes the sunrise on the good and the bad – He heals the sick – He answers our prayers – He grants us his protection, the deliverance – He sympathizes with us – He takes care of ourselves – He will come to eradicate evil – He will judge the world – He will come back to seek his people [those who really accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and personal Savior … This is also the meaning of Love in the Bible of which he is included God’s Love for Humanity …
In addition to this, the subject of love in the Bible, as we said at the beginning, is as much about the love that man has for God. The Bible gives its point of view to this question.

II -The Second Type of Love in the Bible-the Love of Man for God

One of the truths taught in the Bible from the angle of love in the Bible is also: Man’s love for God.
The Bible commanded us, ” You shall love the Lord your God with all your soul, with all your heart, and with all your might. And these commandments, which I give you today, will be in your heart. You will inculcate them in your children, and you will talk about them when you go on a journey, when you go to bed and when you get up. You will bind them as a sign on your hands, and they will be like foreheads between your eyes. You will write them on the posts of your house and your doors ” Deuteronomy 6: 5-9.
And as Jesus could confirm, it is the first and greatest commandment (see Matthew 22: 37-38). Through this commandment, about human love for God, love in the Bible tells us that as creatures, humans must love their Creator, the Eternal God. This indicates that God must be the first, best, and the last place in our heart, he must be the center of our life. This is why it is said that we must have no other God before the face of the Lord (Exodus 20: 3).
It is advisable to note that God claims a voluntary love, with perfect lucidity and conviction, a full conscience, without constraint, nor fear. It must be natural. The love in the Bible also testifies to us that God does not force anyone to love him, although we must do it for our good to ourselves.

– Love for God and Happiness Are Connected

It is the love we carry for God that contributes to our happiness, well-being, peace, and joy. In love we show for God, we find everything we really need. It is good and even beneficial for a man to love his Creator more than anything.
But note that God does not force a man to love him. On the contrary, the love that God has for humanity makes God give us our freedom to choose … For God, we are not objects; we have not been created as automatons. No, we have free will, only that the Lord exhorts us to love him truly because from there depend on our good. Let’s read Deuteronomy 30: 14-20.
The love in the Bible teaches us that if there is a being that we must love in the first place, it is God. This includes loving the business and things of God as well.

– The Love to the Creatures of God Will Arise

Let us understand that by the love we bear for God, it will lead us to love the creatures of God (1 John 4: 20-21) – to follow the Law of God (Deuteronomy 13: 3-4; 1 John 5: 2 -3) – to hate evil (Psalms 97: 10). When the love of God in our hearts, we can exclaim like the psalmist in these terms: “I love you, O LORD, my strength.” Psalms 18: 1.
It is good to note that this same love in the Bible We are reassured that if we love God very well, then it will be easy for us to love our neighbor. For love we bear for God must tirelessly and inevitably lead us to love not only the Creator but also His creatures.
This then says that all types of love in the Bible touch the point of love between humans.

III – The third type of Love in the Bible-Love Between Humans …

God is love. All types of love in the Bible speaks of it. In the same way, God has created man in his image and likeness recommends loving to be love like him.

God commands his people through the Bible to love one another. It is written :
“Thou shalt not take vengeance, nor bears a grudge against the children of thy people. You will love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. ” Leviticus 19:18. One of the favorite virtues advocated in the Bible is love. And this love in the Bible has a special meaning. Every believer, attached to the true and sincere religion of Christ, must know that the love of our neighbor as ourselves is primordial in the Christian faith.

God Loves Us in Spite of Our Sins

God loves us in spite of our sins: a man too must love his neighbor, sinner like him. This is a focal point of love in the Bible. The love that the Bible teaches a man to his neighbor goes beyond our intellectual or worldly conceptions.
For love in the Bible, it is said that a Christian must love his neighbor. The word “neighbor” is synonymous here with “his like,” and this includes all “men without exception”. This love that man should have for man should not lead him to worship, to worship the creature instead of the Creator. Not far from here! Only God deserves to be worshiped, revered, exalted, glorified, raised on earth and in heaven.
Love in the Bible insists that if we love others, then: we will think of their well-being and we will behave well to them (Galatians 5: 22). The expression of this love is linked to faith and hope (1 Corinthians 13:13, Colossians 1: 4-5). He expresses himself in self-denial (John 15:13,  1 Corinthians 13: 4-7).

Love in the Bible Through the Caring for the Weak

Love in the Bible presupposes that we must love even our enemies [those who do not love us] and bless them. As the passage from Matthew 6: 43-48 points out.

So far we have seen that the theme of love in the Bible is as broad as we think. What then to remember the meaning of love in the Bible?
No book insists, teaches, recommends the virtue of love except the Holy Scriptures. We can rightly confirm that the Bible is the book of love that can exist. The love that God has for men, the love that men must have for God, and the love that men must-have for their neighbor. Therefore, the Holy Bible preaches the value, the importance, the benefits, the nature of love.
Three types of love in the Bible show us the relationship and reaction we must have towards God’s love for us, and vice versa: ” Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will it be tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or hunger, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? … For I have the assurance that neither death nor life, neither angels nor dominations, nor present things nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature may separate us from the love of God manifested in Jesus Christ our Lord. ” Romans 8: 34-39.
In the end, of the meaning of love in the Bible that we have treated from three angles, although it is multidimensional, we can remember that love in the Bible is the true love we need to learn and adapt. Love in the Bible is the mark of what is needed for our fallen humanity. Love in the Bible is a reflection of God’s character of love. Love in the Bible is the expression of what God expects from men. Yes, love in the Bible is the way to go if we want a better world.

First Recognize and Believe in God’s Love for Humanity

Love in the Bible demonstrates that the cure for a stable and prosperous world is that men first recognize and believe in God’s love for humanity – then they learn to love God all their being – and finally that they must love one another without discrimination. That’s what we all need to aspire to.
If the love of the Bible were truly understood and practiced, men would see that life is more beautiful and profitable where love reigns. Love is not to be invented; on the contrary, love is a principle of life recommended by God to humanity. It is love that flows from all the other principles of life that contribute to our fulfillment.
Imagine a world full of love. Where men love and serve God willingly. Where men live in harmony with each other, respect each other, help each other, unite, and are immersed in fraternal love, selflessness, and humility.
Imagine if all the advances in this world were made according to the norms and bases of love! That this would be our current world? Our world will be more pleasant and better. The cure for all the evils that our humanity knows: is love.

With the Help of Love in the Bible, We Come to Know That Love Does Not Hurt the Neighbor

The Bible says: ” Love does not hurt the neighbor: love is, therefore, the fulfillment of the Law “. Romans 13:10. This law of which we are speaking here is that of Exodus 20: 1-17 (the Ten Commandments). The precepts of love. These precepts have been given to humanity for peace, tranquility, joy, the happiness of humanity.
It is undoubtedly the fact of having broken this law of love that causes us all these evils. Why not return to this law of love, still in force as immutable and eternal as its Creator?
Do you find that God is good and perfect? It’s because he’s Love. In reality, all the qualities and virtues attributed to God are the fruit of his Love. It is therefore fitting that we must copy, adapt, and practice the three aspects of love in the Bible that we have developed in this article.
” The meaning of three types of Love in the Bible” is the best and the ideal of love that can exist. No work can treat the theme of Love reliably as the Bible. For the author of the Bible is more than love, he is even the source of love.
On this, love in the Bible clearly indicates the virtue to which you must aspire the most in life for your good and that of your neighbor: Love! While Love is our sharing. Love God. Love your neighbor. Do you like yourself: there is no harm in that.
