The Law of God, given at Mount Sinai was divided as well as the first four concerning our relationship with God. And the other six are about relationships between humans. The ten words are the foundation of God’s covenant with His people and the standard of His judgment. Acting through the Holy Spirit, the Law unmasks sin and makes the need of a Savior felt.
Salvation proceeds entirely from grace and not from works, but its fruits translate into obedience to the commandments of God. This promotes the development of a Christian personality and produces a sense of well-being. It is a manifestation of our love for the Lord and our interest in our fellow men. The obedience that comes from faith reveals the power of Christ that transforms lives and thus strengthens the witness of the Christian.
Jesus taught us the meaning of the law of God. Let’s read the following passage: ” Master, in the law, what is the most important command? Jesus answers him: You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, and with all your intelligence. This is the most important and the first commandment. And here is the second commandment, which is as important as the first: You must love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law of Moses and all the teaching of the prophets depend on these two commandments. ” Matthew 22: 36-40.
The Law of God, Given at Mount Sinai Come Into Practice Out of Love
When the Law of God does not come into practice out of love, we fall into legalism and sin in thinking that we are properly observing the Law of God. This was the case with the Pharisees. They observed the Law in form and not in substance.
The Apostle Paul gives us an illustration of this subject: ” Have no debt to anyone except the debt of love you must have between you. He who loves others obeys the law perfectly. Indeed, you know the commandments: Do not commit adultery. Do not kill anyone. Do not steal. Do not desire what does not belong to you. These commandments and all others are contained in this saying: Love your neighbor as yourself! When we love, we do not hurt our neighbors. Therefore, to love is to obey the Law perfectly. ” Romans 13: 8-10. And the apostle John reassures us that to love God is to keep commandments (see John 14:21, John 15:10, 1 John 5: 3, 2 John 1: 6).
Contained in the book of Exodus 20: 1-17, these are the sacred precepts of the Decalogue proclaimed by the great Lawgiver of Mount Sinai wrapped in lightening and shaken by the bursts of thunder. This extraordinary manifestation of divine power and majesty was intended to inspire a profound veneration for the author of this law, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and to leave behind an indelible memory. God also wanted to convince all men of the importance, the sacred nature, and the immutable obligation of His Law.

On this subject, he declares: ” Under the new covenant, the way of keeping the commandments of God is different because this covenant carries a promise: I will put my law in them, I will write it in their hearts (Jeremiah 31:33). Here we have the key. This makes all the difference because roof this is the work of God and not ours.
